In our interview conducted on July 20, 2024, Ms. Wu, a retired community worker who grew up in Ta Lane of the Three Lanes and Seven Alleys (Sanfang Qixiang) and later took part in the ideological outreach for residents affected by the 2007 relocation, shared her memories and working experiences about this historic and cultural district.
The connection between the Three Lanes and Seven Alleys and her family began in her grandparents’ later years, when they rented a public house in Ta Lane where Ms. Wu spent her childhood and adolescence and her parents spent more than three decades living. Ta Lane was home to five households at the time; while the neighborhood did not have the lively intimacy that a large courtyard compound has, it carried its own warmth.
We also discussed about the architectural layout of the Three Lanes and Seven Alleys, and Ms. Wu’s descriptions were suffused with familiarity and reverence. Her family moved out in the mid-1970s—not because of demolition, but due to the pressure of limited living space, as life became increasingly inconvenient when the children grew up.
Ms. Wu began working at Dongjie Subdistrict Office in 1989, and later got involved in the ideological outreach for residents during the 2007 relocation. During the relocation, the Three Lanes and Seven Alleys had fallen into severe disrepair—many buildings were structurally defunct, and typhoons and floods constantly threatened collapse. Nowadays, the district has been transformed from the narrow, dilapidated, and shops-chaotically-distributed South Back Street into a nationally renowned tourist and cultural attraction.
At the end of the interview, Ms. Wu urged us to remember that the preservation of the Three Lanes and Seven Alleys has left Fuzhou with a window into its history and culture. She hopes that the younger generation could cherish this heritage, draw strength from it, and carry forward the patriotic spirit and humanistic ideals of the historical figures who once lived on this land.
